Weaving Sleeping Mats for Homeless

We have adapted to weaving because it is much easier for our middle schoolers to accomplish than crocheting mats together. We made one mat in about 2.5 weeks. I'll attempt to give you the specifics in case you want to do this with your schools.

My club is called ARTreach where the children make art for the community. This month we started collecting recycled plastic bags, making plarn and learning to crochet so that we can make sleeping mats for the homeless. Fortunately, my Great-Grandmom had taught us how to crochet as children. So with the help of youtube and memory I have mastered crocheting once again.

Making Plarn (plastic yarn) from recycled bags. Here's a how to:

I've been using the cardboard center of the paper towels we use in the classroom to house the plarn. I cut a notch on one side to start and just keep wrapping. We are using gift bags to house the plarn, crochet hook (size P) and our start to the mat. It keeps the plarn from rolling across the room. We plan to make the mats about 30"x72"

We had 10 super campers age 7-10 who learned the 3 basic hand building techniques.... 1. Slab, 2. Coil and 3. Pinch. Campers made practice projects to build up to the main attraction of clay slab house. First we made a small coil pot using swirls and other shapes to create interest. Second we made pinch pot animals and learned about the all important "vent hole". Third we made small slab platters that we wedged white and brown clay together to create a cool marbling effect. Along the way "small stuff" was created as well such as slab tiles, necklace charms and fairies. Then we ended the projects with the slab houses and incorporating all three techniques together. And they are all FABULOUS!!! My kids did a great job and were super creative. Proud art teacher for sure:) Please check out their work below.
Some students made paper maché bowls shown on the right and painted them with watercolors in cool designs while others made small clay bowls on the left and demonstrated their slip trailing techniques on them. Miss Ann and I both made the large bowls and serving platter in the center to raffle off to our staff so we could donate money as well as the bowls to such a great event in our community. The Empty Bowls organization is in communities across America and more. They hold events that help raise money for our hungry and give away a bowl to those who gave as a remembrance. Here's a link if your school or organization is interested in participating. http://www.emptybowls.net/
Pre-School Young Rembrandts Program was a great experience for these little people. We just went step by step using shapes they know and love together. They were so excited that their drawings looked like the animals we were trying to create! Afterwards we used crayons to color our creations. Aren't they wonderful! Yeah Preschoolers:)
I've had the pleasure of teaching young men and women at a local middle school since February this year. Here are some of the projects we created.

Warhol's Ads to Art - One of my favorite projects to do with young people. This group was the 8th grade Traditional Art Class. Instructions were to take a grocery item and make it into art while rotating, repeating and resizing. We also worked some color theory into the project as well!

We definitely played with clay and had lots of fun for this 9-week course at Chester County Art Association! Students explored all kinds of handbuilding techniques. Our concentration is on Koi fish and their symbolism. Students first started with a wet on wet cool colored watercolor background. Next we practiced drawing koi fish and eventually worked our way up to drawing 2 fish with one of them turning to transfer onto our foam etching plate. We had a very messy fun time printing our fish all over our watercolor backgrounds and then enhancing them with warm colored pencils and at least one symbol.
Other areas they tried were Foam Etching Prints, Bookmaking, Upcycled Magazine Frames, and Peruvian Weavings. I'll post photos as we go...

The students had already started sketching out their Egyptian Cartouches when I started in March. They had to either draw an Egyptian God or a human turned towards the cartouche with their name in hyroglyphics. They finished them off with details and colored pencil.
Children were told they would get a paper bike and they could take it anywhere no matter if it was imaginary or not. The directions were to only use paper, no pencil marks showing, think about composition and use detail to create interest. For those who finished up early, children created a photo-montage from magazine cuttings in the Romare Bearden fashion.
Boy, we were BUSY today!

After we finished up our heartstring project we started a couple weeks ago with beads, we made Andy Warhol inspired handprints with marker and paint using a grid just like Andy. We also looked at Georgia O'Keeffe flowers and made our own using watercolor and printmaking together. The children also sharpened all the crayons into wax paper and we ironed them to look like stained glass window. Lastly, we had a choice to make a butterfly or bird using feathers, marker, paper and watercolor. Like I said, we were BUSY:)

Today we started PreSchool ART! at the West Chester CCAA. We read "Fiona loves the night" by Patricia MacLachlan and Emily MacLachlan Charest ; illustrated by Amanda Shepherd and sang the "Lion Hunt." In the story it talks about an owl, so we did 2 owl projects and started a dream project to finish up next week. The first owl project was an owl mask, the second we learned how to draw an owl and then we etched our drawing on foam and printed them! The kids loved the printmaking because they got to use the roller and could make more than one print:) Check out their cute owls!
We read "Spring things" by Bob Raczka ; illustrated by Judy Stead. Our craft was a shamrock. To make the shamrock we recycled a tp roll and magazine pages. First we cut the tp roll into 4 equal rings. 3 of the rings we covered totally with magazine cuttings that were mostly green with glue. The last ring we mushed and wrapped the magazine cuttings totally around it for the stem so it looked like a rectangle. After we had all the tp rings covered, we shaped them into hearts and a stem finally hot gluing them together to look like our photo. Lots of fun! Check out the example and make one too.

Mark Teague. We also sang the "Lion Hunt" before we made our
Valentine's Day Heart Strings craft. We made our craft with recycled tp rolls,
red paint, string and beads. Aren't they fabulous! They will make great
window decorations year-round:)
First we used markers to make designs on our coffee filters, then we sprayed water on them to make the colors bleed together! Next step was to dry the filters with a hair dryer. While we waited for the coffee filter to be really really dry we cut out the heart border from the construction paper. Once that was finished, we glued the parts together and decorated it with the extras:) They turned out beautiful and will make wonderful Valentines! Our book today was "How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You?" by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague.
First we read a wonderful children's book "Snow Sounds" by David Johnson and sang the Lion Hunt song. Then we talked about how to create our snowflakes for different level abilities. The simplest and quickest version was to paint the pre-glued fancy Popsicle sticks white with a Q-tip and then dip in silver glitter. To step it up a notch we had markers, paper shapes and sequins to add to this version. Check out how wonderfully creative our 5-year olds and under got with this project:) And I'd like to thank our volunteer Miss Betty for all her help and love she gives our little ones in class.
