Holiday Trees

We had an extremely small class today... 2 children! Must be the Holidays:) William, Clara and the adults had fun with such a sparse group anyhow! We read "Counting Christmas" by Karen Katz and then worked on our craft. Today we made Holiday Trees. The background is blue and white paint spread over a sheet of paper with a recycled piece of cardboard, the tree is torn paper and we decorated with more paper, glitter glue and used a star-shaped sponge with yellow paint for the star. Clara used stuffing to create snow. They did a great job! Happy Holidays

Reindeer Handprints!

We read "Pete the Cat Saves Christmas" by Eric Litwin, sang the "Lion Hunt" and made a handprint reindeer craft. Children used wrapping paper for the trees in their winter scene background, construction paper for the tree trunks and decorations, paint for their handprints and snow, and google eyes because they are cool:) Check out our Holiday fun!

Penguin Snowglobes

Today we read "If You Were a Penguin" by Florence Minor and Wendell Minor, where we learned that people do lots of things that penguins do:) Our craft included making a penguin snowglobe from a recycled cd, yarn, construction paper scraps, glue and fabulous glitter to finish it off. They turned out great!

Santa Count Down 2012!

We are gearing up for the Jolly ol' Elf to Visit! We read "The Night Before Christmas" by Clement C. Moore and Richard Jesse Watson, sang the "Lion Hunt" song and then made our very own countdown Santa calendars. Kids will use these by filling in Santa's beard with a cotton ball every day in December until it's the Night Before Christmas. Check out some of their work. I am pretty sure the glitter was the hit of the project.

Thanksgiving PotHolders

Jake and I just made Turkey Day PotHolders for the Grandmas and GreatGrandmas:) Hope they like them!

Turkey Time!

We had 2 classes today! First class was Mommy and Me where we made circular turkey hand print decorations. The second class, Parents and Kids, we made a festive turkey napkin holder also with our hand print. Kids enjoyed singing the Lion Hunt and listening to 2 books about Turkeys and Thanksgiving. They were "Down on the Farm" by Merrily Kutner and "Thank You, Thanksgiving" by David Milgrim. The materials we used were watercolor, acrylics, cut paper, sequins, tp roll, popsicle spoon, scissors, glue and paper.

Halloween Handprint TP Bats

Our storybook today was "Sheep Trick or Treat" by Nancy E. Shaw. Cute story about all the animals dressing up and giving treats. To go with our story we recycled tp rolls to make the body of the bat and used our handprints to make the wings. To finish them off we glued on eyes and mouths. They turned out super cute!

Mommy and Me Scarey Halloween Spiders

Today we prepared for Trick or Treating by reading this wonderful counting book, "Spooky hour" by Tony Mitton. We made handprint spiders and glued them over a string web of our own making. Scarey!!!

Faux stained glass pumpkins; Mommy and Me project

We read "The Pumpkin Fair" by Eve Bunting, sang the Lion Hunt and talked about how to use a paint brush. Using watercolor kits, we painted a coffee filter and sandwiched them into a cutout paper pumpkin shape, then decorated to look like jack-o-lanterns. You can make them at home too:)

Paper Bag Pumpkins

Today was all about pumpkins! To go with our stuffed paper bag pumpkins, we read "Pick a Perfect Pumpkin; Learning about Pumpkin Harvests" by Robin Koontz and Nadine Takvorian. Did you know pumpkins can be blue? We learned a lot about pumpkins... how they grow, they are a fruit and come in lots of colors! Check out our pumpkins that we stuffed with recycled newspaper, painted orange, glued on facial features and leaves and even used string to make the vine. They are fabulous!

Mouse Paint Color Wheel

Hi all! Today I get to teach a first grade color theory lesson. Here's a photo of my example and the book "Mouse Paint" by Ellen Stoll Walsh. I can't wait to get to class and play. We are also going to use a manipulative (shown) I made out of old colored file folders to investigate color mixing. So exciting!

Mommy and Me Owl Masks

Today we sang the lion hunt song and read the a book. Our book was "Fiona Loves the Night" by Patricia MacLachlan, Emily MacLachlan Charest and Amanda Shepherd. Inside the story there are owls who sing "who cooks for you all?" I always wondered what they were saying, now I know! Check out our cool masks. We cut out the shape from a paper plate and collaged lots and lots of paper and glue on them... finishing them up with yarn to fasten them.

Parents and Kids Pumpkins and Owls

Today I taught the Parents and Kids class. We read "Pick a Perfect Pumpkin; Learning about Pumpkin Harvests" by Robin Koontz and Nadine Takvorian. Did you know pumpkins can be blue? We learned alot about pumpkins... how they grow, they are a fruit and come in lots of colors! Check out the cool pumpkins and owl masks we made for Autumn. We used torn paper to collage our creations together with lots and lots of glue:)

Fall Leaves Fall

To celebrate the beginning of this fall season, we read "Let It Fall" by Maryann Cocca-Leffler. What a great book! Our craft turned into 2 different ones... First, we took real leaves, painted them with watercolors and stamped them onto paper. Second we painted a coffee filter with fall colored watercolors, dried them, cut them into a leaf shape and finished it off by hole-punching each one to hang. Check out our work:)
